The Algiers Point Secret and Benevolent Society of Grand Old Broads was founded over cocktails one evening by a ribald group of "Ladies of a certain age". At the time, our sole purpose was to plan and host a Free, Formal, Annual Mardi Gras Ball locally in Algiers Point. Somewhere along the way we also decided it might be nice to do some charitable things for the neighborhood and those who live in it....but mostly we just want to buy a new Ball Gown every year and show it off to our friends and neighbors ;-)
Mission Statement:
The Algiers Point Secret and Benevolent Society of Grand Old Broads does solemnly endeavor to enhance our community in the following ways:
First and foremost, as passionate ladies who have spent a minimum half century upon this earth, we wish to be recognized as having developed a unique love of life in all its natural and unnatural delights. In an effort to share this great gift with those around us, we pledge that one night a year (specifically the Friday night immediately prior to Mardi Gras) we will invite the community to come together and celebrate the splendor and fabulousness of the season by dressing in our absolute finest and most bejeweled. This celebration shall be called the Peacock Ball and its glorious spectacle will be open to all, every year, for free.
Second as conscientious members of our community we see that from time to time there are those among us who could use a helping hand. By the very definition, ‘Grand Old Broads’ are grand in every way including the amount of space in their hearts for the doing of good deeds. As such each member will pledge to pay an annual membership fee and perform at minimum one hour per month of free service to the fine people of our community in areas where we are best needed. In addition, because sometimes mere volunteer work is only part of the solution, we will sponsor and produce a minimum of one ‘fund raising’ event per year with the goal of amassing resources that can be made available to ease suffering in the face of tragedy and misadventure. We promise that all such events will be executed in keeping with our style and substance thus keeping the Peacock Ball spirit dancing throughout the yearly social calendar.
Third and last; we vow to always and in every way maintain and grow our glorious cause by enthusiastically welcoming any and all ‘Grand Broads’ to join us based on the singular qualification of having spent a minimum half century on this earth. No other defining characteristic will disqualify any person who feels themselves to be a ‘Grand Broad’ and wishes to join our number and celebrate the ideals that first brought us together.
“All Hail The Broads!”
